TMOS Establishment Report – where we’ve come from and where we’re going

2020 was not a year anyone will forget soon. In addition to the pandemic, which had significant impact on the education sector as international students were locked out of the country, Australia also battled its Black Summer bushfires and volatile weather events such as Canberra’s record-breaking hail storm.

It was one extraordinary year for our team to be establishing The Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS). But we did it. It was delayed and it was challenging but when we finally, officially launched on 1st January 2021, it was a very good feeling.

Our Establishment Report covers that journey. It also gives an overview of the science that is at the heart of what we’ll be doing over the next few years. It introduces some of our team, their work, their passions, and what drove them to this field. It captures a wholistic view of our goals both in and out of the lab.

Our focus goes beyond science. We want to become an exemplar in the field in the areas of collaboration, inclusion and diversity, the development of early researchers and community engagement. We hear from our leadership team, where they discuss what we’ve done so far to lay the groundwork for achieving this now and over the next seven years.

Finally, we discuss our accountability measures, including our performance against KPIs and our publications, awards, honours, prizes and awarded funding.

We hope that the report encapsulates who we are now and what we are trying to achieve—breakthrough science and an exciting, fun, and inclusive approach doing it. We’ve tried to capture that in the report’s design as well as its content. We want you to feel as energised by the Centre’s mission as we are.

Happy reading from the TMOS team
