Ampalavanapillai Nirmalathas

Thas Nirmalathas is currently the Deputy Dean for Research at Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne. He also leads the Wireless Innovation Lab. He is a Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne with a research focus on communications technologies and networks with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and innovation.
He has held many senior research and academic leadership positions within the University of Melbourne – including Institute Director – Networked Society Institute (interdisciplinary Institute), Head – Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Co-founder and Director of Melbourne Accelerator Program (MAP), Director of Melbourne Engineering Research Institute (cross disciplinary institute), Group Leader – Networked Systems at National ICT Australia and Node Director for the Australian Photonic Cooperative Research Centre.
He is a Fellow of the Engineers Australia (FIEAust) and a Senior Member of IEEE and Optica. He is an international advisor to Tokyo Tech Academy for Super Smart Society (WISE-SSS). He is the Chair of IEEE Photonics Society’s Emerging Technologies Taskforce.
